College Tennis News - No. 4 Women's Tennis Faces Baylor Wednesday in Waco

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The fourth-ranked Texas A&M women’s tennis team takes a break from Southeastern Conference play to face former Big 12-foe and 42nd-ranked Baylor, Wednesday in Waco. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center outdoor courts, weather permitting, or the new Hawkins Indoor Center.

The Aggies (15-2, 8-1 SEC), who defeated the Bears, 4-0, on Feb. 27 in College Station, will be looking to get back into the win column after their record-tying 13-match win streak ended in a 4-2 home loss to No. 5 Georgia Sunday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

Baylor is 7-12 after falling, 4-2, to 35th-ranked TCU last Wednesday in Waco. It was the Bears’ first Big 12 loss, as they fall to 2-1 in league play.

Senior All-American and fifth-ranked Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar leads the Aggies with a 31-6 overall singles record, tying for sixth in the A&M records for most wins in a season. She is 12-3 in dual matches, all at the No. 1 line, helping A&M to a combined 62-24 singles record in dual matches.

Senior Nazari Urbina, whose 95 career singles victories ties for fourth in the A&M record books, is No. 55 in the nation in singles and sports a 9-2 singles record in dual matches. She has played all matches at the No. 3 line with the exception of one victory at the No. 2 line. Urbina enters the Baylor match riding a four-match win streak.

Cristina Stancu rounds out A&M’s ranked singles players, as she is listed No. 68. The junior is 9-5 in dual matches, all at the No. 2 line.

The lower half of the lineup has been ruled by a trio of freshmen along with senior Wen Sun. Ines Deheza is riding a team-best seven-match win streak. She is 8-3 in dual matches having played the majority of matches at the No. 4 line, where she is 6-2. Stefania Hristov is 13-4 in dual matches, including a perfect 9-0 at the No. 6 line, and Anna Mamalat is 5-3 at the No. 6 line, where the Aggies are 14-3 as a team. Sun is 6-4 in dual matches, having played Nos. 4 and 5.

A&M, 11-0 when winning the doubles point, has a pair of doubles teams listed in the national rankings. Hristov and Stancu are No. 7 with a team-leading 17-6 overall record, including a 9-3 mark in dual matches at the No. 1 line. Sanchez-Quintanar and Sun are No. 72 and are riding a three-match win streak.

Although unranked, Deheza and twin sister Paula lead the Aggies in dual match victories with a 10-4 record, having gone 2-0 at No. 2 doubles and 8-4 at No. 3.

Baylor is led by 10th ranked Ema Burgic, who is 14-5 at No. 1 and is riding a six-match win streak. Victoria Kisialeva is ranked No. 120 with a 12-11 overall record. Together, Burgic and Kisialeva are No. 21 in doubles with a 17-1 overall record. They enter the A&M match riding a nine-match win streak.

A&M is 22-20 in the all-time series against Baylor, although the Bears have won 13 of the last 15 meetings.

The Aggies close out the home portion of the regular season this weekend with a pair of Top-25 matches. A&M hosts No. 23 Auburn Friday at 5 p.m. and No. 7S Alabama, Sunday at noon at the Mitchell Tennis Center. A&M’s three seniors – Sanchez-Quintanar, Sun and Urbina – will be recognized prior to the start of the match against the Crimson Tide.
