OJAI, Calif. -- Fifth-seeded Washington made short work of eighth-seeded Arizona in the first round of the Pac-12 Championships, knocking off the Wildcats, 4-0. The Dawgs took the doubles point and then cruised to three singles victories on the front courts.
The
Dawgs quick victory came as a bit of a surprise after a regular season contest where Washington outlasted Arizona, 4-3, in a hotly contested five-hour match.
"The first match against Arizona was the longest of my career," said head coach Matt Anger. "It was great to get the win and not have it be a real taxing day with another match tomorrow."
Washington began by winning the doubles point, led by Marton Bots and Kyle McMorrow at No. 1. The Husky seniors knocked off Fredrik Ask and Sumeet Shinde of Arizona, 8-3. Clinching the doubles point were Hudson Barnhart and Emmett Egger at No 3. They defeated Matt Dunn and Naoki Takeda, 8-5.
With the doubles point in their pocket, Washington cruised to three singles victories to advance to the second round. Bots started things off, beating Ask, 6-1, 6-1. He was followed by McMorrow who picked up his 23rd win of the season and 98th of his career. He defeated Kieran Thompson, 6-1, 6-1.

Manthou as he has done so many times this season. Playing at No. 3, Mathou defeated Shinde, 6-0, 6-1.
Each of the matches on the back courts were still in progress and all three were close, but thanks to the easy wins on courts 1-3, they did not need to be played out. Instead, Washington got a short day of work and some extra rest for what they hope will be a deep run in the tournament.
Up next is
Stanford who earned the fourth seed and had a bye on Wednesday. The Dawgs fell in a crushing loss at home, 4-3, during the regular season and will look to even the score with the Cardinal.
"Our guys are eager to play tomorrow," said
Anger. "We ended up with three road wins in conference, but the weekend at home with Stanford and Cal really cost us during the regular season. Hopefully we can get a little back tomorrow."
