OJAI, Calif. -- No. 33 Washington dropped a tough one as No. 41 Stanford knocked the Dawgs out of the Pac-12 Tournament. Washington had its chances, but was unable to close some of the final matches to earn move on in the tournament.
"This is a shocking loss," said head coach Matt Anger. "I really thought this is one we should have won and it is hard to take. We just didn't get the job done and I am as frustrated as I can remember ever being."
The Dawgs lost the doubles point, despite a nice win by Marton Bots and Kyle McMorrow over a ranked opponent at No. 1. The pair of seniors knocked off 53rd-ranked Daniel Lin and John Morrissey, 8-5. However, Stanford won both of the other doubles matches and took a 1-0 lead to singles.
In singles, Stanford pushed the lead to 2-0 when Daniel Ho defeated Viktor Farkas, 6-3, 6-2.
The Dawgs then came roaring back with a pair of wins to even the score at 2-2. Bots knocked off No. 117 Nolan Paige, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, followed by Emmett Egger beating Robert Stineman, 7-5, 6-4.
Needing two more wins, Washington was unable to close the deal, however. McMorrow was on the verge of winning his match at No. 1, but Stanford won the other two before he had the chance.
On court six, Trey Stroebel came back from 3-0 down in the final set to defeat Nicholas Kamisar, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The clincher was on court three where Maciek Ramanowicz outlasted Max Manthou in a match that could have gone either way, 7-5, 7-5.
"I am disappointed in myself that I couldn't do more to get Max going," said Anger. "He was working hard trying to get things going, but just couldn't finish games off. It seemed like he had a game point in every game."
McMorrow's match will go in the books as abandoned, although he was up two breaks in the third set and needed just two more points to clinch the victory.
It is a tough pill to swallow for the Dawgs, who will now return to campus and await their NCAA fate on Tuesday. Washington would appear comfortably in the field with its No. 33 ranking, but will have to wait for the committee to find out for sure.
