OJAI, Calif.—The Arizona State women’s tennis team opened up the Championship Singles and Invitational Singles brackets with marquee wins at the Pac-12 Tournament, Thursday, at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club. The women’s competition will proceed on Friday, April 26 with the quarterfinal competition of the singles competition and the first and second rounds of the doubles competition. 

 

Senior Jacqueline Cako, who earned the fourth seed overall in the Championship Singles bracket, won her opening round match-up against UCLA’s Courtney Dolehide in a hard-fought three-set battle. Cako pulled out the victory 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the round of 16. The senior kicked it into gear in her second match with a decisive 6-2, 6-4 victory over Stanford’s Stacey Tan. Cako advances to the tournament quarterfinals and will match-up with Cardinal and sixth-seed Kristie Ahn to move one step closer to a Pac-12 Title.

 

Freshman Desirae Krawczyk, who was also seeded in the Championship Draw, won her opening round of 32 match against Washington State’s Ksenia Googe, 6-2, 6-1. With her win, Krawczyk advanced to the round of 16 but fell to third-seeded Krista Hardbeck of Stanford, 6-2, 6-2.

 

Freshman Joanna Smith opened up the Invitational bracket with a win in the round of 64 over UCLA’s Holly Flemming, 6-2, 6-0. Smith advanced to the round of 32 but fell to the No. 4 seed California’s Tayler Davis, 6-2, 6-0. Both freshman Stephanie Vlad and senior Hannah James had byes for the opening round and helped the Sun Devils pull out victories in the round of 32 to advance to the round of 16.

 

Vlad defeated Colorado’s Erin Sanders, 6-3, 6-2. James used the bye in the first round to build stamina for an all-out, hard-fought three-round singles match. In a round that saw several matches grit out to the last point, James defeated USC’s Valeria Pudillo, 6-7, 6-1, 10-5. Because of the length of the matches in the previous round, the round of 16 matches were only half completed. Vlad was able to complete her round of 16 match and advance to the Invitational quarterfinals after Paige Mills of Utah withdrew due to injury. James will play her round of 16 match-up prior to the start of Invitational quarterfinal play.

 

On Friday, singles play begins at 11 a.m. PT with the doubles competition starting at 3 p.m. PT. The doubles team of Cako and senior Nicole Smith are seeded second overall in the bracket and are looking to make an impact in doubles play to qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championships.
