OJAI, Calif. - In the second day of play at the Pac-12 Tennis Championships, Arizona State was eliminated from play in all three championship brackets. Freshman Stephanie Vlad advanced to the quarterfinals in the Singles Invitational before being defeated in one of the last matches of the afternoon by Tayler Davis of California, 4-6, 6-1, (10-6).
Vlad made her way to the quarterfinals by defeating Piage Miles of Utah and Natali Coronel of Washington the day prior in the rounds of 32 and 16.
"I thought the late two days were really beneficial for everyone. We all got some really great competition that is going to prep us for the first round in the NCAA tournament," ASU Head Coach Sheila McInerney.
Senior Hannah James fell in her mid-afternoon three-set match to Lindsey Kostas from Stanford in the Round of 16. James lost the first set 4-6, won the second 6-3, and fell short in a 10-8 tie break third set. Senior Jacqueline Cako, the fourth seed overall in the singles championship bracket, also fell in her quarterfinals match to Kristie Ahn in two sets. The upset match saw Cako on the losing end of a 6-2 first set and 6-4 second set at the conclusion of the afternoon matchup.
In doubles play, the second seeded senior pairing of Jacqueline Cako and Nicole Smith lost to Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez of UCLA in a tough 8-6 single set.
The Sun Devils will return to Tempe, Ariz. and await a decision by the NCAA selection committee for tournament placement.
