DURHAM, N.C - No. 24 Wake Forest put an early scare into No. 2 Virginia by winning the doubles point, but the Cavaliers rallied in singles to beat the Demon Deacons 4-1 and win their seventh-straight ACC Championship on Sunday.
The Deacons (20-8), who were playing in the ACC Championship final for only the second time in program history, had their top two doubles teams post the best wins of their career to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead. Virginia proved to be too much in singles however, getting straight set wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 to take the match.
"It was great to come out and get the doubles point. The guys did everything that we asked them to do. They were aggressive and focused, and we played some great doubles." said head coach Tony Bresky. "I'm really proud to be the tennis coach at Wake Forest. I'm proud of our guys, of the support system and of our fans that came out to cheer us on. I think we're moving in the right direction."
Virginia cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles as Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen beat Wake Forest's Jon Ho and Anthony Delcore.
But Wake Forest answered right back at No. 2. Danny Kreyman and Adam Lee broke No. 16 Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank early and gained a second break later on, posting a decisive 8-4 win that evened the doubles point.
That left doubles to be decided at No. 1, where Wake Forest's No. 48 David Hopkins and Amogh Prabhakar were knotted 4-4 with No. 3 Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger. Right as the No. 2 match finished, rain began to fall, forcing the match to relocate to the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at Duke.
When the match resumed, the teams held serve through the first four games before Hopkins and Prabhakar broke Stylinger to go ahead 7-6. Hopkins stepped up to the line and blasted four unreturnable serves to give Wake Forest an 8-4 win and the doubles point.
Wake Forest got off to hot starts on a couple of the singles matches, but momentum soon swung in Virginia's favor. The Cavaliers, the 2013 National Indoor Champions, took well to the venue change, winning the first set on four courts and going on to close out those four matches to win the championship.
"We wanted to play the match outdoors. Virginia is a great team indoors and a great team outdoors, but I think that our strength is in outdoor tennis where we can utilize our fitness and fight and tenacity a little more," said Bresky. "Our guys fought as hard as they could, but it just wasn't enough."
The victories came all at once for Virginia. No. 39 Frank finished first in singles for the Cavaliers, battling past No. 78 Prabhakar 6-1, 6-3.
The Cavaliers next two points came almost simultaneously as Julen Uriguen beat Delcore 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 and No. 1 Domijan defeated Kreyman 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. Virginia clinched the match at No. 1 where No. 3 Jenkins beat Hopkins 6-3, 6-2.
The Demon Deacons will await the NCAA Tournament selection show, which will be streamed live on NCAA.com on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
