SEATTLE -- Washington's Kyle McMorrow earned a spot in the NCAA Singles Championships as announced on Thursday. The Husky senior was selected for the third-straight season and will be looking to advance out of the opening round for the first time.
McMorrow is ranked No. 17 in the ITA poll released on Thursday, meaning he just missed earning a seed at the NCAA Tournament. The top eight players were seeded, 1-8, while the next eight received generic 9-16 seedings.
The actual draw will not be announced until soon before the tournament starts on May 22. Because McMorrow was not seeded, he is guaranteed to face a seeded opponent in the first or second round.
McMorrow has fared well against the tournament's seeded players, going 2-0 on the season. He defeated No.7 seed Emilio Gomez of USC, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 10-7 on April 13 and 9-16 seed Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 back on January 13. He also faced No. 3 seed Jarmere Jenkins of Virginia on February 15, but the match went unfinished due to the Cavaliers clinching the team win.
McMorrow became just the eighth Husky to be selected to the NCAA Singles Tournament three times. Only Husky legends, Bill Quillian, Alex Vlaski and Alex Slovic made four appearances in the NCAA singles field. The others to make three NCAA fields are Jim Brink, John Lowe, Dick Knight and Matt Hanlin.
McMorrow has had a tremendous senior season, including a 23-5 singles record. In dual play, McMorrow was even better, going 21-3 and losing just once in conference play. He now has 98 career wins, good for fifth all-time at Washington.
The senior hopes to become the eighth All-American in UW men's tennis history. He will need to make the final 16 at the NCAA Tournament or finish in the top-20 of the ITA rankings to accomplish that feat.
