FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - BOISE, IDAHO—April, 23, 2013—The Idaho Tennis Association (IdTA), in an effort to recognize the outstanding dedication of tennis players and enthusiasts throughout the state, is excited to announce the return of the Idaho Tennis Hall of Fame Banquet presented for 2013 by Micron.  The first awards banquet in 10 years, this event will serve as an opportunity to recognize those individuals and organizations that go above and beyond to bring recognition and positive growth to the sport of tennis in Idaho. 

This year, the Idaho Tennis Association will be inducting Steve Appleton into the Idaho Tennis Hall of Fame.  The Idaho Tennis Hall of Fame was established for the purpose of honoring individuals for their outstanding contributions to the sport of tennis in Idaho.  It is the intention of the Hall of Fame Committee and the Idaho Tennis Association to perpetuate throughout time the incredible history, legacy and contributions that individuals have made to the sport of tennis in Idaho.  Steve Appleton was not only a pillar in the Boise community as the CEO of Micron, but an advocate to the growth of tennis in our community, and the Idaho Tennis Association is honored to name him a part of the legacies that make up the Hall of Fame.

In addition to the induction of Steve Appleton, the Idaho Tennis Association will be awarding 16 awards to individuals and organizations throughout the Intermountain Idaho section for 2013.  These individuals were nominated by other Intermountain Idaho members who recognized their exemplary service to tennis in Idaho.

The 2013 Award winners are:

  • IdTA Community Service Award: Nancy Sommerwerk (Donnelly, Idaho)
  • Steve Appleton “Extraordinary Service to Tennis” Award: Dennis Gibbens (Pocatello, Idaho)
  • IdTA Family of the Year Award: Neville Family (Idaho Falls, Idaho)
  • Barbara Chandler “Junior Sportsmanship & Service” Award: Caden Moortgat (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Organization of the Year Award: Crane Creek Country Club (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Coach of the Year Award (10 and Under): Sean Timoney (Twin Falls, Idaho)
  • IdTA Diversity & Inclusion Award: Randy Corbett (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Male Adult Player of the Year Award: Bill Fritz (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Adult Player of the Year Award: Marilyn Parker (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Male Junior Player of the Year Award: Reuben Mulhern, Borah High School (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Female Junior Player of the Year Award: Bianca Mok, Boise High School (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Male League Captain of the Year Award: Gary Miller (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Female League Captain of the Year Award: Marnie Newton (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Tournament of the Year Award: Lyle Pearson Labor Day Championship, hosted by Sun Valley Resort; Tournament Director: John Perry (Sun Valley, Idaho)
  • Tennis is Elementary School of the Year Award: Hunter Elementary (Meridian, Idaho), Pioneer Elementary (Meridian, Idaho)
  • IdTA Instructor of the Year Award: Shelley Lane (Boise, Idaho)
The Idaho Tennis Association will also be presenting special awards to Jerry Boas (Sun Valley, Idaho), Ron Dibelius (Boise, Idaho), and Tommy Buford, Boise High School (Boise, Idaho).

Additionally, we will be recognizing the 2012 winners, including:
  • Steve Appleton “Extraordinary Service to Tennis” Award: Greg Patton
  • dTA Family of the Year Award (also named USTA Family of the Year): Osborn Family (Pocatello, Idaho)
  • Barbara Chandler “Junior Sportsmanship & Service” Award: Parth Raina (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Organization of the Year Award: Treasure Valley Tennis Association (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Coach of the Year Award (10 and Under): Jim Moortgat (Boise, Idaho)
  • IdTA Diversity & Inclusion Award: Chuck Chui (Boise, Idaho)
The Idaho Tennis Hall of Fame Banquet presented by Micron will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013 at the Stueckle Sky Center (located near Bronco Stadium on the Boise State University campus) from 6:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m.  The banquet, hosted by Tom Scott with appearances by Greg Patton, Boise State Men’s Tennis Head Coach, and Mark Adams, President of Micron, will include dinner, a silent and live auction, and our awards presentation.  Tickets may be purchased on Eventbrite, and can be reached by visiting the Idaho Tennis Association website at www.idtennis.com.  All proceeds from this event will benefit the Idaho Tennis Foundation, which provides financial assistance to IdTA’s junior tennis programs.

The Idaho Tennis Association heads the Idaho District of the Intermountain Tennis Association, a section of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the United States.  The IdTA is a nonprofit organization with more than 4,000 members in southern Idaho.  We coordinate and promote adult leagues, Tennis 101 and 201 (for families), Tennis is Elementary (for grade-school children), and Junior Team Tennis.

The Idaho Tennis Foundation, incorporated in 1974, is a nonprofit organization with the goal of providing financial assistance for junior tennis programs in Idaho.  In 2010, the Idaho Tennis Foundation focused its efforts to provide scholarships for students in our Tennis is Elementary and Junior Team Tennis programs, as well as equipment costs, instructor pay, and administrative expenses.  It is the goal of the Foundation to provide every child the opportunity to participate in our programs and learn the game of tennis in a fun and supportive environment.
