BERKELEY - California women's tennis head coach Amanda Augustus claimed the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year award for the Northwest Region, the governing body of college tennis announced this week. With the Golden Bears preparing for the NCAA round of 16 on Friday, Cal's Tayler Davis, Zsofi Susanyi, Anett Schutting, Klara Fabikova and Lynn Chi also earned a combined six accolades from the ITA and the Pac-12 Conference.

 

The eighth-seeded Golden Bears continue action in the team portion of the NCAA Championships when they play No. 9 Alabama in the NCAA round of 16 at 7 a.m. PT on Friday in Urbana, Ill.

 

Susanyi, a sophomore who is the No. 5 seed in the NCAA singles tournament, and Schutting - a junior who is the NCAA singles' No. 8 seed - earned first-team All-Pac-12 status. Fabikova, a freshman, earned a spot on the All-Pac-12 second team and Chi, another freshman, claimed honorable mention. Davis picked up the ITA Senior of the Year award for the Northwest Region, while Fabikova collected the regional ITA Player to Watch honor.

 

Augustus, a Cal alumna who earned NCAA doubles titles in 1998 and 1999, has led the Bears to the NCAA round of 16 in each of her seasons as head coach at her alma mater. Through the Bears' May 11 match against Auburn, Augustus has compiled a 117-35 all-time record at Cal. This season she has led the Bears to an 18-5 dual-match record and to dominating wins in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships, as Cal blanked both Stony Brook and Auburn by 4-0 scores last week.

 

Ranked fifth in the latest ITA singles poll, Susanyi entered the season as Cal's No. 1 singles player, after she became the first Golden Bear to reach the NCAA singles semifinals as a freshman in 2012. While nagging injuries kept her out of a few matches, the product of Szeged, Hungary, has produced a 29-5 record so far, including a straight-set win in the first round against Stony Brook. As part of the nation's 43rd-ranked doubles team, Susanyi and Fabikova have posted a 14-5 record.

 

Schutting has logged the most action of the dual-match season at the No. 1 singles spot for the Bears. The Tallinn, Estonia, native, who reached the NCAA singles quarterfinals last season, swept USC's ninth-ranked Danielle Lao in two matches this season, reached the semifinals of the Pac-12 singles tournament and, more recently, beat No. 124 Nina Lagvilava, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the win against Stony Brook and run her record to 35-13.

 

In doubles, the 33rd-ranked duo of Schutting and Chi has put together a 19-8 record, including an 8-3 upset of 10th-ranked Pleun Burgmans/Plamena Kurteva that won the doubles point against Auburn on May 11. The team of Chi/Schutting is an alternate for the NCAA doubles tournament that - as with the NCAA singles tournament - runs May 22-27 in Urbana.

 

Fabikova - ranked 43rd by the ITA - has been impressive in her debut season as a Bear, compiling a 36-9 record that includes a 6-1, 6-1, singles victory against Auburn's Emily Flickinger on court two. She has posted a 7-2 record on court three, though she has played on court two - with a 5-1 record - in her last seven dual matches. Her highlights include reaching the Pac-12 quarterfinals - in which she fell to Schutting, 6-2, 6-4 - and beating the likes of No. 29 Kristie Ahn (Stanford), 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), No. 32 Zoe Scandalis (USC), 7-6(3), 7-5, and No. 40 Kyle McPhillips (UCLA) - the eventual Pac-12 singles champion - 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

 

Davis - a San Francisco Bay Area product from San Jose, Calif. - brings a 34-9 record to Urbana, after she capped off her last match at Cal's Hellman Tennis Complex with a match-clinching, 6-2, 6-3, victory over Kurteva in the win over Auburn. She had an eight-match winning streak late in the season, before she retired from her Pac-12 semifinal with a minor injury. In doubles, she has posted a 29-7 record. She has posted a 7-1 record with her most recent partner, junior Kelly Chui.

 

Chi - from Weston, Fla. - has a 37-7 singles record. The 70th-ranked freshman most recently notched Cal first singles win over Auburn, with a commanding 6-0, 6-1, triumph over Jackie Kasler on court four. She has played No. 2, 3 and 4 singles for the talented Bears and has a 4-0 record on court four over Cal's last five dual matches.
