Alabama Readies for NCAA Round of 16 Matchup with California

URBANA, Ill. - The Alabama women's tennis team will make its first appearance in the NCAA Round of 16 in program history on Friday when it takes on California at 9 a.m. CT at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex located on the campus of the University of Illinois. The ninth-seeded Crimson Tide and No. 8 Golden Bears will be meeting for the second time overall, and first time since 1989.
 
Alabama advanced to the Round of 16 collecting a pair of 4-0 wins in the tournament's first two rounds against Northwestern State and Memphis. Entering the final site, Tide holds a record of 21-5, marking the first 20-win season under head coach Jenny Mainz, who is in her 16th at Alabama. The Tide currently boasts three ranked singles players in No. 34 Mary Anne Macfarlane, No. 36 Alexa Guarachi and No. 118 Maya Jansen. In addition, two of Alabama's doubles teams are ranked nationally including Guarachi and Macfarlane and No. 7 and Jansen and Antonia Foehse at No. 83.
 
Cal finished second in the Pac-12 this season and enters the Round of 16 on an eight-match winning streak. The Bears (18-5) posted wins over Stony Brook and Auburn in the first two rounds of the tournament, both in 4-0 fashion. Cal has four nationally-ranked singles players in No. 5 Zsofi Susanyi, No. 8 Anett Schutting, No. 43 Klara Fabikova and No. 70 Lynn Chi and two top-45 doubles teams in No. 33 Chi and Schutting and No. 43 Fabikova and Susanyi.
