URBANA, Ill. – Auburn freshman Pleun Burgmans dropped a tight three-set match late on Wednesday night to Stanford’s No. 14 Krista Hardebeck, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to conclude her freshman singles season in action from the round of 64 at the NCAA Individual Championships hosted by the University of Illinois.
Burgmans, ranked 22nd overall by the ITA, came out strong and won the first set 6-4 to take an early lead. She trailed 3-1 in the opening, but won five of the last six sets to jump out to a game advantage.
In the second set, Burgmans won the first game before falling behind 5-2. The freshman was able to break Hardebeck’s serve to make it 5-3 before the Stanford freshman evened the match at one set a piece.
Auburn’s Burgmans fell behind quickly in the deciding set, but managed to tie things at 2-2 and then 4-4. From there Hardebeck won the next two games to take the match.
Despite falling in the singles bracket, Burgmans will still compete with partner Plamena Kurteva in the doubles bracket on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. CT against Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans from William & Mary.
Kurteva and Burgmans are ranked 10th nationally, while the William and Mary duo stand 13th according to the ITA.
