 Senior men's tennis player Joe Salisbury defeated UAB's former number one singles player David Zimmerman, 6-4, 6-1, in the qualifying draw of the Players Choice Open in Birmingham Tuesday to advance his way into the main draw of the Futures event.

Salisbury had a first round bye in the singles bracket. He then defeated Max Rebol, 6-0, 6-3 in the second round and made it to the qualifying round with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Hunter Johnson before Tuesday's win over Zimmerman.

For his efforts, he will face the No. 2 seed of the main draw Wednesday, facing Hans Podlipnik-Castillo, the No. 279 ranked player in the most recent ATP rankings.

Salisbury then capped his day in the main doubles draw with senior teammate Cedric De Zutter. It was the first time the two fourth-year Tigers had teamed together in a doubles bracket and the duo almost upended the Canadian team of Philip Bester and Kamil Pajkowski, falling 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6) in their first-ever match together.

Teammate David O'Leary also made it to the qualifying round of the same F28 event. O'Leary also had a first round bye, and followed that up with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Langford Hills. O'Leary then upended Milo Johnson, 7-6 (8), 6-3. O'Leary split the first two sets of his qualifying round match, 2-6, 6-4, but fell 6-3 in the third set to Mississippi State's Malte Stropp.

De Zutter and freshman Jarryd Woog also participated in the qualifying draw at the F28 event. De Zutter fell to Ole Miss' Stefan Lindmark, 6-4, 6-2 in the firsts round, while Woog picked up a pair of victories in his second career Futures event, defeating Patrick Pradella from Baylor, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5), then followed that up with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Abhin Sharma in the second round. Woog then faced Zimmerman, who fell to Salisbury on Tuesday, falling 6-3, 6-3.
