KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennys Sandgren got off to a winning start Tuesday to open his third Knoxville Challenger as a professional tennis player.
 
Sandgren, a 2011 All-American at UT, took care a business quickly in his first round singles match, cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ukraine's Denys Molchanov at Goodfriend Tennis Center in front of the evening crowd.
 
He will face either former teammate Rhyne Williams or American Ryan Harrison in the next round.
 
John-Patrick Smith, the 2011 SEC Athlete of the Year, did not fare as well in his opening match. He lost to doubles partner and big server Sam Groth 6-3, 6-3.
 
In doubles, current Vols Jarryd Chaplin and Andrew Dromsky lost to Ryan Harrison and Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-4.
 
Wednesday's evening schedule will feature a lot of Tennessee players, both past and present.
 
Smith and Groth play doubles at 5:30 p.m., while Chaplin takes on current UVA player Mitchell Frank in singles at the same time. Williams' singles match against Harrison will go on court after Smith's doubles match, not before 7 p.m.
