FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Ole Miss men’s tennis team had a tough day at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday, dropping both main draw matches in singles and doubles at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The day began with doubles. William Kallberg and Stefan Lindmark matched up against Florida State’s Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez in the first round. Trailing 6-4, Kallberg and Lindmark broke back to pull even at six all. Kallberg served to stay in the match and force a tiebreaker, but the FSU duo broke to win it 8-6.
Kallberg and Lindmark then played a consolation match later, but lost to the No. 3 ranked team in the nation, Texas A&M’s Jackson Withrow and Junior Ore, 8-4. The Stockholm, Sweden natives conclude the fall with a 6-3 record and the Southern Regional Championship.
In one of the last singles matches to go on, Nik Scholtz faced a rematch of the second round of the ITA All-American Championships against Baylor’s Julian Lenz. Scholtz defeated him in the team’s dual match last year, but Lenz won the earlier meeting in straight sets. The third meeting went the way of Lenz as well, 6-3, 6-2.
Scholtz will play in the singles consolation Friday.
The national indoor features the nation’s top players from all divisions. The men’s singles field showcases six of the top 10 players from the ITA Division I Men’s Preseason Rankings, including Scholtz is ranked No. 7.
