ATHENS, Ga. - The Florida State women's tennis team saw success on Sunday at the ITA Southeast Regional at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex but were ultimately defeated, not by another school, but by the elements. Rain throughout the weekend had caused scheduling issues and resulted in the singles consolation draw to be suspended after the round of 16.
For the Seminoles that were able to see action, there was quite a bit of success. Kerrie Cartwright won both of her singles matches on the day, defeating UCF's Cortney Cesarini, 6-0, 6-2, and taking down Chaimaa Roudami from Georgia State, 6-1, 6-1. Laurence Porry also added a straight set singles victory over Jana Hueckinghaus of Kennesaw State, 6-3, 6-1.
Majlena Pedersen had an impressive three-set win in the singles B draw semifinal against Annika Hepp of UCF, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2). Pedersen then received a walkover victory in the singles B finals.
Kristina Schleich and Duda Dos Santos each fell in tough three-set battles. Schleich lost to Virginie Stein from Kennesaw State by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4). Dos Santos also took the first set of her match, but could not hold off Rasheeda McAdoo of Georgia Tech, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
Due to receiving a pair of walkovers, Daneika Borthwick did not compete on Sunday.
Up next for Florida State is the USTA Clay Court Invitational at Disney in Orlando, Fla., from Oct. 24-27. For more on FSU women's tennis, check us out on Facebook (facebook.com/FSU.WTennis) and Twitter (@FSU_WTennis).
