FLUSHING, N.Y. – Duke University sophomore Beatrice Capra captured the singles consolation title on Sunday at the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship by downing 37th-ranked Abigail Tere-Apisah of Georgia State, 7-5, 6-4, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

“It feels good,” said Capra to win the title.  “This is always a really tough tournament to play.  Obviously, they have the best players in the nation playing here. It was disappointing to lose my first round match as I think I just let the moment get to me.   I was glad I was able to put my disappointment aside, come back, play and get some good wins under my belt.  It was a good tournament all in all.”

Capra, who is out of Ellicott City, Md., came out in the first set and took a 5-3 advantage early.  Serving for the set, Capra was broken and then Tere-Apisah won the next game to even the match at 5-5.  Duke’s Capra, the No. 1 seed in the bracket, then took control and won the next two games to win the first set, 7-5.

“I had never played her and I didn’t know her game,” commented Capra.  “She was very good and aggressive.  It is always difficult to play someone that you have never played before.”

In the second set, Capra went up a break, 3-0, but then lost her serve and Tere-Apisah was able to even the set at 3-3.  The next two games were split, before Capra closed the match by winning the final two games, 6-4.

She closed the fall campaign with a 15-2 singles mark.
