CARY, N.C. - The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team lost to No. 51 Boston College in the opening round of the ACC Tournament by the score of 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.
The Panthers (4-15) lost the doubles point in heartbreaking fashion as Boston College (14-9) escaped with a tiebreak victory on court two to gain a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
The Eagles' tandem of No. 66 Jessica Wacnik and Lexi Borr claimed the first double victory on court one over Pitt's Taylor Washington and Audrey Ann Blakely by a score of 8-3, but Pitt evened doubles on court three as Katherine Castro and Molly Wickman topped BC's Heini Saloney and Emily Safron 8-6.
With all eyes on court two, Pitt's duo of Jacelyn Lu and Lolade Ogungbesan found themselves in a tiebreak with Wan-Yi Sweeting and Katya Vasilyev. The Eagles would ultimately win the tiebreak 8-1 and claimed an 8-7 victory which awarded BC the doubles point.
Heading into singles, BC was victorious on courts one, three and four en route to the 4-0 victory.
On court four, Heini Salonen of Boston College provided the Eagles with a 2-0 lead as she defeated Katherine Castro 6-1, 6-1. Jessica Wacnik then made the score 3-0 with a straight set 6-2, 6-3 victory over Audrey Ann Blakely in first singles.
The decisive point came on court three as BC's Lexi Borr topped Lolade Ogungbesan 6-3-, 6-2. Taylor Washington on court two, Molly Wickman on court five and Amanda Wickman on court six left their matches unfinished when the outcome had been decided.
