Daniel Nguyen and Roberto Quiroz are victorious in Illinois and Venezuela.

Trojan teammates on USC’s 2012 NCAA Championship team, Daniel Nguyen and Roberto Quiroz’s paths may have divided but both have conquered. This past weekend — on two different continents — Nguyen and Quiroz each worked their ways to singles titles.

USC grad Daniel Nguyen was in action in Godfrey, Ill., at the $10,000 Futures tournament. The single title match offered up a rematch of the No. 3 singles clash from the 2012 NCAA Championship. Nguyen was up against UVA’s Mitchell Frank, who had beaten him in that tilt in 2012 in spite of USC’s eventual national championship victory. This time, Nguyen had Frank’s number. Frank was serving for the match and up a break, but Nguyen dug in and forced a tiebreaker, fighting back one again to beat Frank and stake his claim on the crown. It was Nguyen’s fourth Futures singles title as a pro.

Meanwhile, Roberto Quiroz — entering his senior season at Troy — was at work in Venezuela, playing as an amateur at the $15,000 Futures tournament there. He’d take out another former U.S. collegiate star in Duke’s Henrique Cunha during the semifinals before going on to beak Jorge Planta of Peru in straight sets in the final to claim his first ITF Men’s circuit singles title. Quiroz would also pick up the doubles title at the event, teaming up with Argentine Mateo Martinez as the top seeds and winning it all to capture Quiroz’ 10th Futures doubles title.
