FLUSHING MEADOWS, NEW YORK – Former Texas A&M men's tennis All-American Austin Krajicek earned the first grand slam victory of his career at the US Open Championship held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York Tuesday afternoon .
The left-hander defeated Santiago Giraldo of Columbia in four sets Tuesday afternoon. The former Al-American claimed a trio of tie-breakers in sets two, three and four to advance to the second round of a grand slam event for the first time in his professional career. Krajicek will face 15th-seeded Kevin Anderson of Russia in the second-round on Thursday.
Krajicek and his doubles partner, fellow American Nicholas Monroe, are set to face sixth-seeded Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea in the doubles draw Wednesday afternoon on court 14. Krajicek enters the weekend ranked 117 on the ATP World Tour rankings, just four places off his career high of 113 set two weeks ago. The 25-year old sits at 67 in doubles, just six places of his career high set in April of this year. In doubles action, Krajicek has picked up at least one win in each of the last four tournaments he has competed in, all four were played alongside Monroe.
Three weeks ago Krajicek raced to the finals of the Comerica Bank Challenge, falling to John Millman in three sets. The lefty dispatched of Bjorn Fratangelo, Malek Jaziri, Mischa Zverev and Dennis Novikov en route to the championship match appearance.
The Bradenton, Florida native featured in the maroon and white from 2008 through 2011, completing his career atop the doubles dual victory charts for A&M and sixth in singles wins.
