College Tennis News - Brandon Holt & Riley Smith Win ITA Southwest Regional Doubles Title

Top-seeded Trojans had to face their own teammates in today’s final.

MALIBU, CALIF. — In an all-Trojan doubles title match at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships today, it was seniors Brandon Holt and Riley Smith who wound up wielding the trophy in Malibu. The top-seeded Holt/Smith tandem was able to ward off teammates Mor Bulis and Daniel Cukierman with a 6-2, 6-4 decision in the final. In doing so, Holt and Smith ink their names on USC’s sixth doubles crown won at the event and first since Max de Vroome and Eric Johnson won it all in 2013.

But there was far more than doubles on tap for the Trojans on the final day of play in Malibu. USC had also three Trojans slotted in the singles semifinals. After doubles was complete, Bulis and Cukierman were scheduled to divide and conquer in singles. Cukierman had drawn freshman teammate Stefan Dostanic for one of those semifinal bouts, but Cukierman would withdraw from the tilt, and Dostanic advanced to the final. In the opposite semi, Bulis was lined up against UC Santa Barbara’s #28 Joseph Guillin. The Gaucho would get the best of Bulis, winning 6-1, 6-4 to square off against another Trojan in the title match. There, Dostanic made the first move with a strong first set, but Guillin got up a break in the second and held on to force a third set. Another battle ensued, but it was Guillin who held off the USC freshman to win the singles title with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 comeback.
