Tennis is one of the biggest sports in the world, with a total of a billion fans worldwide, and a hugely popular amateur scene. The game has been around since the 12th century, originally played in France, where players would strike a small ball with the palm of their hands. Through the years it has evolved to become the racket sport that we all know, and love today. The popularity of tennis earned it a spot at the inaugural Summer Olympics of 1896, and apart of a brief stint where it was removed, it has remained a staple of the Summer Olympics to this day.
Tennis is also one of the most popular sports to bet on, both online and offline. In fact, Tennis is the third most popular sports in betting shops, succeeded only by Horse Racing, and Football. The reason for tennis’ popularity on the betting scene, is the ease with which amateurs can bet on a match. A tennis bet is as simple as picking a winner of a set, or a match. Of course, there are other, more complex ways to bet on tennis, but that is simply the easiest one. On online sportsbooks like
Helpbet tennis bets are very popular.
Through the history of the sport, there have been a number of Tennis players who have soared above the rest, and proven themselves to be true sports stars. In this article, we will look at a couple of women who have proven their mettle, and today stand atop as legends in the world of Tennis, and more broadly sports.
Serena Williams
Serena Williams is one of the greatest Tennis players of all time, male or female. She has won 23 Grand Slam Titles, 73 career titles, and is by far the best player active today. Serena is not just force when playing individually. Together with her sister, Venus, they have won 14 Grand Slam Doubles titles, and have been dominating the tennis world since the 90s. Currently, Williams holds the Open Era record for Grand Slam singles titles won by any tennis player, female or male.
In the minds of many, Serena Williams is the greatest tennis player of all time. She is still going strong today, playing competitively in some of the biggest tennis tournaments, despite turning 40 this year.
Steffi Graf
With a total 22 Grand Slam Singles Titles, is it any surprise that Steffi Graf, for a long time, has been considered the best player in the world of Tennis. Her 22 Grand Slams are not, however, the highest achievement in career. Steffi Graf is the first female tennis player to achieve a
Golden Slam, when in 1988 she won all four Grand Slam Single titles. That same year, Steffi Graf also won the Olympic gold medal. If all of that wasn’t enough to be considered greatest of all time, Steffi Graf is the only player, male or female, in the history of the sport to have won all major titles four times. Another record she holds is her ranking as singles No. 1 by the WTA for a total of 377 weeks.
With all these accolades, it is absolutely no surprise that many consider Steffi Graf the best of the best, even today.
