Tennis Wins 3 in Rain-Shortened Opening Day

The University of Texas at Tyler men’s and women’s tennis teams went a combined 3-0 to open their 2009 schedules on Saturday at the Summers Tennis Center, despite the rain stopping one match and canceling another.

Both teams opened the day by posting impressive 9-0 victories over American Southwest Conference West Division foe Schreiner.

The women (2-0) continued to roll by beating Division II Ouachita Baptist, 9-0, later in the afternoon.

The men (1-0) began their second match of the day by sweeping Division II Southeastern Okla., 3-0, in doubles action. However, the match was suspended during the first game of the six singles matches due to rain.

The rain also canceled the final match day, a women’s match against another Division II opponent, Henderson St.

Both teams will open ASC play this week when they travel to Longview to take on LeTourneau. The men will face the YellowJackets on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., while the women will meet the LadyJackets on Wednesday, also at 3:00 p.m.
