No. 23 Arizona Headed to Athens for NCAA Regionals
Sunday, 05/04/2014

No. 23 Arizona women’s tennis was selected to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday, set to take on No. 42 Florida State in Athens, Ga. on Friday, May 9 at 1 p.m. ET.

With their selection, the Wildcats will embark on their 22nd tournament all-time and eighth in head coach Vicky Maes’ tenure.

“We are thrilled to be heading to the tournament once again,” Maes said. “We have had a stellar year and it’s only fitting that we are going to the toughest region in the country.”

Also in Arizona’s bracket are Elon and Georgia, the No. 1 ranked team overall.

UA finished its regular season 17-5 behind an experienced team, led by seniors Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) and Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium), who went a combined 30-12 at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.

Arizona’s five losses came only to teams in the top 30 and defeated five ranked teams.

The Seminoles finished with a 15-12 record, including a 6-8 mark in the ACC. Junior Kerrie Cartwright is the only ranked singles player at No. 123, while the duo of Cartwright and junior Daneika Borthwick rank at No. 44 in the doubles standings.

“We’ll be facing a really challenging first round against FSU, but we’re very excited with this matchup,” Maes said. “We play our best when we know it is going to be a battle.”
