COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the first match of their two-match road trip, the No. 70 Nebraska Cornhuskers were defeated by the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes, 6-1, on Friday evening. The loss drops the Huskers to 7-9 on the year and 0-3 in Big Ten Conference play. Ohio State improves to 21-2 and 4-0 in Big Ten action.

Ohio State started the match by picking up the doubles point when they swept the Huskers on all three courts.

On court No. 1, OSU’s No. 39 team of Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen downed NU’s No. 19 squad of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim, 8-5. Ohio State’s No. 31 Chase Buchanan and Peter Kobelt downed NU’s duo of Robert Schulze and Andre Stenger, 8-3, on court No. 2. On court No. 3, the Buckeyes’ duo of Biaz Rola and Connor Smith defeated Nebraska’s team of Stefan Gollner and Eric Sock, 8-4.

Nebraska’s lone point of the match came in singles play on court No. 1 when NU’s No. 79 Aumueller upset OSU’s No. 5 Rola in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, and ended his 10-match winning streak.

Nebraska’s head coach Kerry McDermott was very happy to see the senior upset the No. 5player in the country.

“It’s a great honor for Aumueller to beat Rola,” McDermott said. “He puts in lots of hard work and I’m really happy for him. I hope the win can carry over to our next match.”

Ohio State got back on the winning track on court No. 2 when OSU’s No. 12 Buchanan downed NU’s No. 95 Lindheim, 6-0, 6-4. On court No. 3, The Buckeye’s No. 54 Kobelt was victorious over Nebraska’s Stenger, 6-2, 6-4.

On court No. 4, Ohio State’s McCarthy downed NU’s Schulze in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Playing at the No. 5 spot in the Huskers lineup was Gollner, who was downed by OSU’s Hunter Callahan, 6-2, 7-5. On court No. 6 OSU No. 110 Nelson Vick was victorious over NU’s Sock, 6-1, 6-0.

Even after the tough loss, McDermott like the effort the determination he saw in his squad.

“It was a tough match. Ohio State is a good team. We played much better today than we did against Pepperdine last week,” McDermott said. “I thought our effort and determination was very good. I hope we can have this same type of attitude and work ethic and I hope to carry it over to Penn State. I loved how our guys competed.”

Nebraska will travel to University Park, Pa., to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday, April 1. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
