No. 6 Texas downs Vanderbilt, 5-2
Wednesday, 03/04/2009

Longhorns take the doubles point and add four singles wins in 5-2 win over the Commodores.

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 6 Texas (11-2) claimed the doubles point and picked up singles wins from sophomore Ed Corrie, juniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala and senior Miguel Reyes Varela in a 5-2 win over Vanderbilt Tuesday evening at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

Texas opened the match by taking all three doubles contests to nail down the doubles point.  Juniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala knocked off Nick Cromydas and Bryant Salcedo at the second slot, 8-2.  UT clinched the doubles point with a win at first doubles, where sophomores Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico hung a 9-7 defeat on Adam Baker and Alex Zotov.  UT wrapped up the doubles session with an 8-6 win from senior Miguel Reyes Varela and junior Jon Wiegand over Alex DiValerio and Charlie Jones at third singles.

Corrie staked Texas to a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Salcedo at second singles.  Zotov pulled the Commodores within 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Wiegand at sixth singles, but the Longhorns would put the match away with wins at the first and fourth positions.

Kutrovsky dealt Cromydas a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at first singles, and Reyes Varela clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Baker at the fourth slot.  Vanderbilt’s Vijay Paul outlasted UT’s Damico in a third-set super-tiebreaker at third singles, and UT finished off the match at fifth singles

“I was really impressed with Vanderbilt,” UT coach Michael Center said.  “They were really competitive at every spot.  I thought we had some terrific performances, but we still need to improve.  Dimitar Kutrovsky is playing very well and being really aggressive in the middle of the court.  I thought Josh Zavala really picked up his level in the second and third sets after being a little tentative at the beginning of the match.  I’m pleased with the way he finished.”

Texas resumes play on Wednesday, March 11 against Duke at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
