Good weekend for the men's tennis team at Gustavus
Monday, 03/16/2009

The UW-Whitewater Men's and Women's teams boarded the bus together Friday morning looking to do some damage in St Peter, MN as they were each going to take on the University of Sioux Falls on Friday night and then D-3 national powerhouse Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday.

The Lady Warhawks were able to know out the Gustavus Gusties 5-4 in a showdown of nationally ranked teams.  Gustavus came in ranked #5 in the region and #18 in the nation.  UW-Whitewater was #7 in the region and #24 in the nation.  It was a classic five hour battle that went down to Annie Smith sealing the deal at #3 singles upping their record to 14-1.

The men's team played terrific against the Gusties as well, but were unable to any of the matches on the correct side of the win/loss column.  Gustvus men are ranked #8 in the nation and #3 regionally, while the Warhawks are #8 in the region and #32 in the nation.  Athough the team lost at each position, five of the matches were very close, but none of the Warhawks pulled out the win.  At #1 doubles Caiati/Lowe were up a break on the #2 ranked doubles team in the nation before the Gusties broke back and won the match 9-8 in a tie break.  At #2 and #3 doubles the Warhawks hung tight early before the Gusties pulled ahead to take each match 8-4.  At #1 singles, Lowe had lost the first set, but was up a break serving at 4-3 before John Kauss, the #1 ranked singles player in nation evened the match and closed it out winning 6-4.  At #2 Mike Harmatys dropped the first set, but recoverd to dominate the second set 6-1.  He was on a roll, but the match went to a match tie break in stead of a third set.  His opponent Charlie Paukert forced a few errors and took a large lead.  Harmatys fought back, but it was too late, and Paukert pulled it out.  At #3, Glinert had his hands full as Burdakin played very tough tennis from all areas of the court.  #4 was a battle of the serve and volley players, but Caiati could not quite hang with Tomasek as he was a little tougher converting his first volleys and served very well.  At #5 singles Timmy Moller fought back from an early deficit and climbed into the match.  He lost the first set 6-4 and then took the second set to 4-5.  With his opponent cramping it looked like Moller had a good chance of getting the win, but Clark dug in and took the second set 6-4 as well.  Alex Mory played very well at #6.  He led in the first set tie break 5-2 and had a set point, but Nick Hansen charged back to take the first set 7-6.  Mory then took the second set quickly 6-2 sending it to a match tie break.  Unfortunately he dug a hole trailing 9-4.  Mory won the next three points putting the pressure back on Hanson, but Hanson hit a winner for the match.  Below are the final scores:

The teams are very excited as they prepare for our spring break trip.  We will be flying down to Orlando, FL on Friday together and the team will each be playing 5 matches.  Many of the matches will have important ranking implications against some very strong teams, so it will be more than fun in the sun, but we are planning on going to Disney and Daytona on our days off, so there will be a small amount of fun allowed.

Check our website for scores while we are gone, but I'll be sure to send you a wrap up at the end of the week.

GO WARHAWKS!!
