UWW Men's play well but lose to D-1 UW-Badgers
Saturday, 01/23/2010
The UW-Whitewater men's tennis team traveled to Madison to take on the University of Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday and lost 7-0. This was the Warhawks' first dual meet this season and they started it against a tough Division I team ranked 32nd in the nation.
Despite solid play across the board, the Badgers were too much for the 'Hawks. The Badgers are loaded with talent this year and are expected to climb the Division I national rankings this year and challenge for a Big Ten title.
Although the Warhawks were swept, they challenged the Badgers at several positions.
Danny Glinert
and
Kelvin Caiati
teamed to push the Badgers before falling 8-6 at #1 doubles. Glinert, Caiati, and
Erik Scanlan
all worked their first sets of singles to tiebreaks at the #1, #2 and #4 singles slots, while
Mike Harmatys
lost 6-4 in the first set at #3. They would all eventually lose in straight sets. Caiati had a set point in his tiebreak and Scanlan had a 5-3 lead in his tiebreak, but their opponents camp up with the goods when needed. Glinert had the most competitive match as he also pushed his 2
nd
set to 4-4 before falling.
I’d like to thank all the wonderful Warhawk fans that came out to show their support. It is always one of the most attended matches for the Badgers at Nielsen Tennis Stadium each year.
