Warhawks split a pair in Michigan
Saturday, 02/20/2010

Hello Warhawk Tennis fans, the Warhawks had their hands full on Saturday and came away from Kalamazoo, MI with a split beating Albion College 8-1, but losing to Kalamazoo 7-2 in a match that was in fact very competitive.

The Hawks let a couple of opportunities slip by, when #2 doubles lost a nail-biter at #2 doubles and Krieger and Halweg each lost match tiebreaks after splitting sets with their opponents from Kalamazoo, the #6 team in the region and #21 in the nation. Kelvin Caiati picked up four wins on the weekend and extended his winning streak at #1 doubles with Danny Glinert to 7 straight (over very good competition).

In doubles Caiati/Glinert beat the #7 team in the region 8-6, while Scanlan/Hintz dropped their match 8-6. At #3 Covelli/Harmatys lost to a very aggressive K-zoo team 8-4. In singles Glinert lost at #1 6-3, 6-3, Caiati spit sets before winning his match against Jadun in a match tiebreak. Harmatys lost at #3 to Jason Brown, Scanlan lost at #4 to Patrick Boyd. Halweg lost in a see-saw battle at #5 and Krieger had forced his match tiebreak with a 6-0 second set before losing 10-8.

Against Albion the Hawks had a battle at #1 doubles, but managed to keep the streak alive. The Hawks cruised at #2 and #3 with Covelli teaming up with Krieger in this one to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead heading to singles. In singles the drama was at #1 and #6. Danny Glinert banged his knee up at the end of the second set, but battled on, only to lose in a match tie-break after a gutsy performance. Mark Sansait made his season debut in the singles line-up fighting for a 6-4, 7-5 win to give the Hawks their 8-1 win. The Hawks won at #2-#6 only losing 6 games total in those 4 matches.
