Wednesday, 11/20/2013

Gators Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) and Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) lost their respective consolation singles matches at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Friday.

Both Gators pushed their opponents to a third set, but were unable to pull out a victory, as they capped their fall season.

Oyen lost to Columbia’s Kanika Vaidya, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, while Cercone dropped a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-1, decision to Auburn’s No. 18-ranked Pleun Burgmans.

No information was available on the results of the other five members of the team, who began action Friday at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic held at the Athletic Center of Lakewood Ranch in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

This weekend’s events are the final tournaments of the fall season.

Quotes from the Courts:

“It’s tough for these two to find a silver lining this week. They have put the bar so high since the first day. This will motivate us during the break as we get ready for the dual match season in January.” – UF head coach Roland Thornqvist
