AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Charlotte Phillips tallied three wins to claim the singles consolation title to close out the final day at the Longhorn Invitational for the University of Houston women’s tennis team on Saturday.
 
Phillips opened with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over UTSA’s Jacobea Junger and followed up with a 7-6, 6-3 defeat of LSU’s Ariel Morton to advance to the consolation white draw finals. There, Phillips cruised past Irinka Toidze of West Virginia by a score of 6-4, 6-1 to claim the title.
 
“We had a tough start to the day, but a couple of strong wins by Charlotte helped us to leave on a high note,” head coach Patrick Sullivan said. “Finishing the weekend with a winning record against teams that this program has traditionally struggled against is encouraging, and a sign that we are moving in the right direction.”
 
Fellow sophomore Liselot Koenen claimed the only other victory of the afternoon, defeating Agustina Valenzuela of North Texas by a score of 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 in the firstround of her respective consolation flight before falling to West Virginia’s Hailey Barrett in straight sets.
 
Dionne Sanders and Elena Kordolaimi both dropped straight-set decisions in the singles main draw while the pair also fell in the doubles semifinals.
 
The Cougars return to action on Friday at the Lumberjack Classic in Nacogdoches, Texas.
