Four members of the University of Memphis men's tennis team will travel to Chicago this weekend to participate in the Olympia Fields Invitational hosted by the University of Illinois. All six teams sending competitors to this weekend's tournament finished last year in the top 31 in the country in the year-end team rankings. Virginia capped the year at No. 1 after winning in the national championship game, 4-3. Kentucky finished at No. 9, Memphis finished at No. 20, Texas at No. 23, Illinois at 24 and Notre Dame at 31.
The Tigers are sending a contingent of three seniors and one freshman to the event, which starts Friday. Seniors David O'Hare, David O'Leary, and Johnny Grimal will join freshman Jarryd Woog in the tournament field. It will be the first-ever collegiate match for Woog, a Memphis native who redshirted last semester after joining the Memphis roster in January.
"We are sending a good mix of players to the tournament this weekend," head coach Paul Goebel said. "We have three seniors going who know what it takes to compete at that level and then we are sending our one freshman. That's a tough field for your first collegiate tennis matches, but Jarryd (Woog) will gain a lot there and will have some teammates with some good experience to show him the ropes."
Each Tiger entry will play four singles matches and three doubles matches in the preseason tournament.
