Men's Tennis Advances Three to Round of 16 at ITA Regionals
Friday, 10/25/2013

Three senior members of the University of Memphis men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins in singles play on day two of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional to advance to the Round of 16. Seniors David O'Hare, Joe Salisbury and Johnny Grimal all won two singles matches on Saturday to earn a Sunday singles slot in the Round of 16.

The day got off to a great start for the Tigers, with all six singles entries advancing from the second round into the Round of 64. O'Hare got on the board first with his 6-2, 6-0 win over Chattanooga's Pavels Grigorjevs, the No. 17 seed in the singles draw. Trailing 2-1, O'Hare won every point the rest of match to advance to the Round of 32. O'Hare then downed another tournament seed, upending No. 4 seeded Sebastian Stiefelmeyer of Loiusville, 6-3, 6-3 to qualify for the Round of 16. There, he will face Purdue's Ricky Medinilla. This will be the second match-up with a Memphis Tiger for Medinilla, who defeated David O'Leary, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7) at the ITA All-American pre-qualifier last week.

Salisbury also came through with a pair of Saturday wins, opening his day with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen. He then bounced back from a 6-2 first set loss to claim his round of 32 win with a 6-3, 6-2 second and third set to earn a Sunday match-up against No. 9 seeded David Fox of Middle Tennessee. That match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Sunday.

Grimal made a straight set Saturday of it, opening his morning with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Middle Tennessee's Aaron Jumonville, then downing Lipscomb's Daniel Hernandez, 6-1, 6-3 to advance to Sunday's singles schedule. He will face East Tennessee State's David Biosca, who will be playing just his third match of the tournament. Biosca won his first round match, earning a Saturday meeting against No. 2 seeded Tom Jomby from Kentucky, but Jomby withdrew from the singles draw due to injury, giving Biosca a walk-over to a Round of 32 match, where he took out seeded Anton Kovrigin from Vanderbilt.

Three other Tigers won their first singles matches on Saturday, putting all six Memphis entries into the Round of 32, but had their runs ended there.

Cedric De Zutter was a late addition to the singles draw and made the most of his opportunity, downing Purdue's Aaron Dejovne, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 to earn an afternoon meeting with Kentucky's Kevin Lai. Lai, one of the tournament's seeded players, was not going to get caught off guard from the late entry, and downed De Zutter, 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the Round of 16.

David O'Leary also started his day with a quick win, downing Murray State's Adam Taylor, 6-2, 6-0 to earn a spot against one of the Tennessee entries playing on their home court. O'Leary and Hunter Reese split the first two sets, with Reese winning the first set 6-4, and O'Leary answering with a 6-4 win of his own in the second set. The Tiger senior was in position to close out the third set win, but had to battle the tournament's No. 3 seed and the home crowd, and fell 7-5 in the third set.

Freshman Jarryd Woog made his first run in the ITA Regionals a deep one, following up his first round win on Friday with a 7-5, 7-6 win in the Round of 64 over a seeded Mauricio Antun from Belmont. The freshman then took No. 9 seeded Jimmy Roebker of Xavier to three sets, but fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to wrap up his first appearance at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional.

Sunday will open with a round of doubles play in the quarterfinals. O'Hare and Salisbury will face the Morehead State team of Ji Hoon Heo and Jack Swindells at 8:30 a.m. The Sunday schedule calls for two rounds of doubles to be followed by one round of singles play.
