Junior Connor Glennon opened his day with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Wake Forest’s Jonathon Ho, then closed his afternoon with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 win over No. 96 ranked Austin Powell from North Carolina State for his first win of the year over a ranked opponent on day one of the Virginia Ranked +1 Invitational, Friday.
Glennon started the day with a win in doubles with teammate Cedric De Zutter. The duo downed Michigan’s team of Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu in the Silver doubles draw to advance to a match against the No. 1 seeded Virginia team of Huegas and Jones, Saturday.
De Zutter and Joe Salisbury split their singles competitions Friday. De Zutter won his opener against Wake Forest’s Jaya Billa, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, and then went three sets with Georgia Tech’s Carlos Benito, falling 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Salisbury took No. 94 Francisco Dias from George Washington to three sets and a tiebreak in his first match of the year, unfortunately getting edged 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. He then found himself down a set in his second match against Elon’s Stefan Fortmann, but battled back to win the next two sets, 7-5, 6-2.
David O’Hare was facing the blue singles’ draws top seed in the first round, and fell to Elon’s Cameron Silverman, the No. 34 ranked player in the country, 6-3, 6-4. He did not get a chance to get back on the court for the rest of Friday though, receiving a walk-over from Nicholas Jones and receiving a first round bye in doubles play with doubles partner Joe Salisbury.
