Men's Tennis Sends Three Through to Second Round of ITA Qualifying Draw
Friday, 10/25/2013

It took the better part of a full day, but the University of Memphis men’s tennis team sent all three singles entries through to the second round of the ITA All-American qualifying singles draw.

Senior Johnny Grimal was the first Tiger through to the second round, squeaking through in a thriller, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2), over South Carolina’s Chip Cox. Grimal will now face No. 15 seeded William Kallberg of Ole Miss on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the second round.

Junior Connor Glennon, the No. 91 ranked singles player in the country, was the next through, picking up a 6-4, 6-4 victory over South Carolina’s Andrew Schafer, who had won his way from the prequalifying draw into the qualifying field. Glennon will next face Wake Forest’s Adam Lee, the No. 31 seed in the qualifying bracket, at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday.

The last Tiger through almost didn’t make it through until Tuesday morning. It was just before midnight when senior Joe Salisbury came all the way back from a 7-6 (8) first set loss to win the next two sets, 6-1, 6-4 over North Carolina’s Brett Clark to advance to a Tuesday second round match against No. 21 seeded Clay Thompson from UCLA, Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
