Ducks Rally to Defeat Rival Pilots
EUGENE, Ore. - After more than three weeks since their last match, the Oregon men's tennis team was a bit rusty at the start of its match against Portland. The Ducks rebounded quickly, however, winning five singles matches after losing the doubles point to the Pilots to win the match 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon inside the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks evened up their 2009 record at 8-8 with the victory while the Pilots fall to 11-6 on the season.
Sho Higuchi won first for the Ducks at No. 6 singles, taking down the match 6-3, 6-1. Ric Mortera (6-3 6-4) and Marcos Verdasco (6-3, 6-4) put Oregon ahead 3-1 with wins at No. 4 and No. 1 singles, respectively. Mortera improved his season record to 6-5 after missing the first few matches of his junior campaign with an injury.
Portland won its first singles match of the day at No. 3 singles, to cut the Oregon lead 3-2. The match would be decided at either No. 2 singles by Alexander Cornelissen or at No. 5 singles by Jose’ Izquierdo, with both matches in third sets.
Up 5-4 in the third set and Portland’s Bryan Thorp on the serve, Izqueirdo took the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to give himself and the Ducks the victory. Thorp was assessed a point penalty with Izquierdo up 30-15 in the match point after he purposely smashed a ball three courts over after double-faulting on his serve.
Cornelissen also won his singles match after the dual was decided, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.
