Oregon Loses to #20 Arizona
Monday, 04/13/2009

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon men's tennis team played outdoors for the first time this season but the Arizona Wildcats proved to be more suited for the sunshine, defeating the Ducks 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the 18th Street Tennis Courts.

The Ducks fall to 8-9 on the season and 0-1 in the Pac-10 after dropping their first conference match. Arizona continues to impress as the Wildcats improve to 16-1 in 2009 and 1-0 in conference play.

Oregon's lone win came at No. 1 doubles where Alexander Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco won 8-3 over UA's Francois VanderMerwe and Pat Metham. Arizona won the other two doubles match to take the early point and then swept through all six singles matches in straight sets.

Verdasco was looking like he was on his way to a big upset of Arizona's No. 64 ranked Jay Goldman at No. 1 singles when he was leading 4-1 in the first set but Goldman rallied to win the first set 6-4 and took down the second set by the same score.

The Ducks will play again tomorrow when they take on San Francisco at 1 p.m. Rain is likely in the weather forecast tomorrow so the match will probably be played indoors at the Student Tennis Center.

Please see the transcript of the live blog below for full results and match commentary.

The Oregon men's tennis team is outdoors today for first time since 2006 to play Pac-10 foe Arizona at the 18th Street Tennis Courts. If you can't make it to the facility and enjoy the beautiful weather, you can catch all the action here in the GoDucks.com live blog.

On a side note: this live blogger's dedication to Oregon tennis has grown to new heights today. The outdoor facility does not provide a true space like the desk at the indoor Student Tennis Center - so I am posted up on top of a trash can with a 50-foot extension cord running to a supply shed to bring you the results here today. You're welcome. The makeshift desk also doesn't have the strongest wireless internet connection, so please be understanding today if updates get spaced out.

On to the action.
