Oregon Director of Tennis and men's head coach Nils Schyllander has announced the signing of Norway-born standout Nicholas Bjerke to a National Letter of Intent. He will join the Ducks this fall for the 2009-10 season.
Bjerke, from Oslo, is currently ranked No. 3 in the Norway men's rankings and has an impressive background of tournament wins and performances.
"Nico will make an immediate impact for our team," said Schyllander. "He has a very clean backhand and has grown tremendously as a tennis player in the last year."
The graduate of Wang High School (June, 2008) and member of the Holmenkollen Tennis Club won a juniors doubles national championship in 2007 and advanced to the semifinals of the juniors singles national championship.
After graduating from high school Bjerke has spent the last year competing on the men's circuit and in international tournaments. He has carried over his success from the juniors level.
Bjerke moved all the way to the semifinals of the men's indoor singles national championship in Nov. 2008 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the men's outdoor singles national championship also in 2008.
"I expect Nico to continue his improvement and success here at the University of Oregon," said associate head coach Jonas Piibor.
