SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—The University of Oregon men’s tennis team opened Pac-12 play on Friday afternoon against the Utah Utes, falling 5-2. The Ducks move to 13-3 on the season and 0-1 in the Pac-12, while Utah improves to 11-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
“Obviously we are disappointed,” said head coach Nils Schyllander. “We got out-worked by a very energetic Utah team in some spots.”
In doubles, the Ducks continued their success as all three duos won their matches and UO won the doubles point for the 16th consecutive time this season. Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier defeated Slim Hamza and Devin Lane 8-6 on Court 1, while Aaron Clissold and Daniel Sardu topped Dmytro Mamedov and Alejandro Medinilla 8-5 on Court 2, and Daan Maasland and Alex Rovello took down Ben Tasevac and Cedric Willems on Court 3.
Oregon was not as successful in the singles portion of the dual match, however, as Maasland was the only Duck to record a victory, beating Lane 7-6(7), 7-5. Cambier fell 6-1, 6-3 to Mamedov in the top spot, while Mullen fell 6-4, 6-7(5), 3-1ret. On Court 2. Medinilla defeated Rovello 6-4, 6-3 on Court 3, while Sardu fell 6-2, 6-4 to Willems, and Brent Chin lost to Tasevac 6-2, 6-2 on courts 5 and 6, respectively.
“We need to regroup, put our hard hats on and get ready for a very tough Arizona team. We will be ready,” added Schyllander.
Oregon returns to action on Sunday as it takes on Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. with the match scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. A full recap with statistics will be available following the match on the UO athletics website, www.goducks.com.
