GOODFRIEND INDOOR TENNIS CENTER
Tennessee tennis players are fortunate to call one of the most impressive collegiate indoor facilities in the nation home. The Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center gives the Vols a winter home and a way to continue competition or practice in the event of inclement weather. The center gives Tennessee its first on-campus indoor tennis complex in school history. The center takes the place of Cedar Bluff Racquet Club in West Knoxville, host of all Vol indoor matches since the late 1980s.
Following the 1998 season, the Volunteers moved all operations into the Indoor Tennis Center. The new "Home of the Vols" boasts four courts, a capacity for 500 fans, a reception area and a concession stand. The facility also features new locker rooms, a team room and coaches offices for the daily use of the Volunteer tennis team.
The Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center hosted the 1998 SEC Indoor Tennis Championships and the annual UT/USTA $50,000 Men's Pro Challenger.
VARSITY COURTS
The University of Tennessee Varsity Tennis Courts are considered among the finest outdoor playing facilities in the intercollegiate ranks. The facility features six courts which are located on the west side of campus, across from the Presidential Court Complex and behind Andy Holt Student Apartments.
The courts have been refurbished on a regular basis since being built in 1976. They were last renovated prior to the 1997 season. A facility with a 2,000 seat grandstand and a modern two-story clubhouse was completed in 1981. In 1987, former Vol All-America Paul Annacone donated lights for the courts.
Since its completion, Knoxville-area tennis enthusiasts and Tennessee students have filled the Varsity Courts to see collegiate tennis at its best.
The Varsity Courts have been the site of numerous prestigious tournaments including the SEC Championships, Region III Championships and several high school tournaments. The courts are also used during the summer for the Big Orange Tennis Camps. Most recently, the courts served as the site of the 2002 SEC Tournament, with the mighy Vols crowned champions.
