Virginia’s Domijan named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Weeku
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia freshman Alex Domijan has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after defeating four fellow Top 50 opponents in straight sets and leading the top-ranked Cavaliers to an unprecedented fourth consecutive ITA National Indoor Title.
Playing on the No. 2 court during the weekend tournament in Seattle, the second-ranked Domijan defeated No. 42 Kyle McMorrow of Washington (6-3, 7-5), Johnny Hamui of Illinois (6-3, 6-3), No. 21 Chase Buchanan of Ohio State (6-4-6-3) and No. 17 John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee (6-2, 6-4). Virginia defeated those four opponents by a combined score of 16-3.
Domijan’s wins over Buchanan and Smith came against players who earned All-America honors in 2010, and his win over Smith clinched the championship match vs. Tennessee. Domijan, a native of Wesley Chapel, Fla., also teamed in doubles with Michael Shabaz for the first time. The new duo went 3-1 at No. 1, including wins over the No. 6 and No. 24 ranked teams.
