CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 3 Virginia men's tennis team (20-1, 7-1 ACC) plays two matches this weekend, beginning on Thursday, April 13 when it hosts No. 18 Georgia Tech (15-3, 7-1 ACC) at 4:30 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers will close out the weekend by playing at Boston College (4-13, 0-8 ACC) on Saturday, April 15.
Thursday’s match, which was originally scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. but has been changed to a 4:30 start time, is Senior Day with J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.), Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) and Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland) all being recognized in an on-court ceremony after the completion of the doubles point.
Saturday’s match at Boston College will not have live scoring available and there also will not be live Twitter updates from the match. A complete recap of the competition will be posted on Saturday evening on VirginiaSports.com. The start time and site of the match in the Chestnut Hill, Mass., area are still to be determined.
The Cavaliers moved up one spot to No. 3 in this week’s Oracle/ITA National Rankings after picking up a pair of victories last weekend, including a 4-3 win against No. 11 North Carolina. Junior Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) won the clinching match against the Tar Heels and improved to 14-0 in singles this season. Freshman Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) returned to the court after not playing for six weeks because of an injury to pick up a pair of singles wins and improve to 8-0 this season.
Aragone enters the week with a career record of 98-21 in singles, two victories shy of hitting the 100-win mark. Aragone is 16-1 in singles since Feb. 5.
Virginia and Georgia Tech are currently tied for second place in the ACC standings at 7-1. Christopher Eubanks is the reigning ACC Player of the Week on April 11. Eubanks, who is No. 5 in the latest ITA singles rankings, downed two ranked opponents on the weekend, topping No. 72 Spencer Furman of Duke in straight sets 6-3,6-4 on Friday before cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 114 Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff of Louisville on Sunday afternoon. Eubanks is 13-1 overall in singles and 8-0 in conference singles matches this season.
Boston College is coming off back-to-back 7-0 sweeps last weekend at the hands of Florida State and Miami. The Eagles have a combined 4-44 record in ACC singles matches this season.
The Cavaliers have added a home match to their schedule and will be hosting the red-hot Richmond Spiders (23-2, 6-0 A-10) on Tuesday, April 18 at 4 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. Richmond has won 22-straight matches and has not lost since January 21, nearly three months ago.
Admission is free for all UVA home tennis matches and free parking is available at the Culbreth Garage. Parking is also available at the Central Grounds Garage (hourly rates apply). Live scoring and live streaming video will also be available via the link posted on VirginiaSports.com.
