Virginia’s Shabaz repeats as ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia senior Michael Shabaz was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second straight week and fourth time this season after leading the second-ranked Cavaliers to a pair of victories over two ranked Big 12 opponents on the road.
Shabaz dropped a total of seven games in two matches vs. fellow top-35 singles opponents as Virginia defeated No. 32 Oklahoma and No. 6 Texas by 5-2 scores.
Playing on the No. 2 court in the doubles match, the No. 8 Shabaz scored a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 34 Ionur Belelu of Oklahoma. Shabaz then moved up to No. 1 for the Texas match, where he defeated No. 33 Ed Corrie by a 6-1, 6-2 score. Shabaz and teammate Drew Courtney added a doubles victory in the win over Oklahoma.
Shabaz, of Fairfax, Va., improved to 13-1 in dual matches this season. In addition to this week’s Player of the Week honor, Shabaz was also cited as the ACC Player or Co-Player of the Week on Jan. 25, Feb. 8 and March 15.
