SEATTLE -- No. 30 Washington swept Seattle U. in a doubleheader as the two teams experimented with a new format. The Dawgs won the first match, 7-0, then turned around and beat the Redhawks for a second time, 7-0.
The new format had five singles matches and one doubles match being played simultaneously on six courts. The doubles match is worth two points, while each of the five singles matches are worth one point. The experimental format means the matches are much shorter with no changeover between doubles and singles.
On Friday, the two local schools played two, since each match took under two hours.
In match one, Viktor Farkas and Jeff Hawke teamed to win the doubles points and stake UW to a 2-0 lead. The pair of Huskies defeated Kyle Rapp and Flavio Malaguitti, 8-2.
Washington followed that up with five singles victories, all coming in straight sets. Max Manthou led things off, beating Zach Kosanke of Seattle U., 6-0, 6-2. He was followed by Emmett Egger, who knocked off Ian Clare, 6-0, 6-2, which clinched the team win.
Adding to the singles wins totals were Rishabh Raman who earned a win at No. 5, beating Gus Orlando, 6-2, 6-1, and Nicholas Kamisar who knocked off Jason Bediones, 6-0, 6-2.
Finally, Kyle McMorrow wrapped up the sweep, beating Kevin Lynch, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot.
In the second match, McMorrow moved over to doubles and teamed with Dragos Puscalau to defeat the same doubles team of Seattle U., 8-2.
The Dawgs would then go on to sweep the five singles matches, although two needed a 10-point pro set tiebreak. Hudson Barnhart began the sweep with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bediones at No. 4.
Clinching the win was Marton Bots, who played at No. 1 with McMorrow in the doubles match. He defeated Lynch 6-1, 6-4. Moments later, Kamisar won for the second time of the day, this time beating Ian Clare at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3.
Finally, Egger and Nico Lunardi completed the sweep, although both needed to come from behind. Playing at No. 2, Egger dropped the first set 4-6, but came back to win the second, 6-4, followed by a 10-6 win in the tiebreak. Lunardi had a similar result, beating Bryan Nguyen at No. 5, 6-7, 6-2, 10-6.
The pair of victories moved Washington to 13-6 on the season as it wrapped up non-conference play. Next up, the Dawgs begin Pac-12 play with a pair of road matches next weekend. Washington travels to Arizona and Utah as part of a difficult road trip.
