Sunday, 04/07/2013

SEATTLE -- No. 30 Washington fell to 15-8 and 2-2 in conference with a 6-1 loss to California on Saturday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Dawgs fell behind early, but battled back to make things interesting in the late matches, before falling, 5-2.

Washington dropped the doubles points as the Golden Bears won at No. 2 and No. 3. Hudson Barnhart and Max Manthou fell in their match, 8-4, followed by Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke losing, 8-6. Hawke and Egger played well early on and led 6-5, but dropped the last three games after having their serve broke at the 6-6 tie.

Marton Bots and Kyle McMorrow were in the middle of a hard-fought match against Cal's top team, but it when unfinished with the score tied, 5-5.

In singles, Cal pushed the lead to 2-0 when Mads Engsted defeated Viktor Farkas at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1.

The Dawgs then earned their first point when Nicholas Kamisar earned a straight-set victory at No. 6. The sophomore defeated Chris Melton, 6-1, 6-4.

Cal then went on to clinch the match, despite a couple of matches that appeared to be going Washington's way. First, Bots had a lead in the second set, before allowing No. 46 Campbell Johnson back into the set, eventually falling, 6-2, 7-5.

The clincher came at No. 3 when No. 66 Chris Konigsfelt defeated Manthou. Konigsfelt appeared to have the match in hand, when Manthou came roaring back to win the second set after trailing, 5-2. However, after Manthou won the second, he could not carry it over into the third, falling 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-0.

The Dawgs earned their second point when McMorrow won a three setter, beating No. 44 Ben McLachlan, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The win was the 12th in a row for McMorrow and his 18th of season.

In the final match, Egger won the first set against Greg Bayane in a tiebreak, but lost in three, 6-7 (0), 7-5, 6-1.

The match completed the home season for Washington, who will now head out on the road for the final three Pac-12 matches. Next up is a difficult trip to Southern California to take on No. 2 UCLA and No. 3 USC.
