GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech’s Yoann Re and Clemson’s Ani Mijacika have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Players of the Week after posting wins over top-10 ranked opponents during the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Kickoff Weekend.
Re, a junior from Quebec, Canada, won both of his singles and doubles matches in Columbus, Ohio, en route to the Men’s Player of the Week honor. Re upset No. 6 Justin Kronauge of Ohio State 6-2, 6-4 in No. 2 singles after teaming with Patrick Daciek to upset the Buckeyes 41st-ranked doubles team.
Re was solid against New Mexico in the first round, easily winning both his singles and doubles matches. Re topped Miles Bugby 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 in that singles match.
Mijacika, the Women’s Player of the Week, helped the Tigers win two matches and advance to the round of 16 of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. She won both her singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of Auburn’s 6th-ranked Fani Chifchieva.
Mijacika avenged a pair of losses to Chifchieva (at the 2009 NCAA Singles and at last fall’s ITA All-American), dropping just three games on Sunday afternoon. Her doubles win against Auburn proved crucial as the two teams split their matches in singles play. Mijacika is now 16-3 in singles action for the year and 4-0 in dual matches.
