Wingate's Flavio Rathsam is this week's SAC Player of the Week
Friday, 03/19/2010

Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University sophomore Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) is the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending March 15, 2010. He wins the award for the second time this season.

Rathsam won two huge matches as the Bulldogs edged NCAA Division II number 24 Anderson (S.C.) University 5-4 Monday at Wingate. The Bulldogs evened the match at 4-4 when Rathsam outlasted Anderson freshman Deni Mehagic 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the number five singles flight. Earlier in the day, Rathsam and classmate Bruno Pudence (Sau Paulo, Brazil) combined for an 8-6 triumph over Renato Assuncao and Stan Atema at the number one doubles flight.

The Anderson victory was a big one for the Bulldogs, as the Trojans eliminated Wingate from the 2009 NCAA Division II play-offs with a 5-2 victory in Milledgeville, Ga. Rathsam had a hand in both Bulldog victories in Wingate’s tough NCAA loss last year. With Monday’s singles victory, Rathsam is 8-0 overall this season and 21-1 overall for his Wingate career. The Bulldogs host SAC foe Catawba College today (Tuesday, March 16, 2010) at the WU Tennis Complex.
