WINGATE TENNIS TEAMS BLANK PFEIFFER 9-0 THURSDAY

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men’s and women’s tennis teams completed the fall portion of their schedules with identical 9-0 victories over Pfeiffer University Thursday at the WU Tennis Facility. Both Bulldog teams hold 2-0 overall records on the season.

Wingate men 9, Pfeiffer 0

Wingate did not drop a set Thursday. Bulldog sophomore Diego Martinez (Queretaro, Mexico) topped Pfeiffer sophomore Sebastian Wernecke (Johannesburg, South Africa) 6-1, 7-5 at the number one singles flight. Earlier in the day, Martinez teamed with freshman Sebastian Hall (Lörrach, Germany) to earn an 8-1 victory at the number three doubles position.

Wingate lost only 16 games at flights two through six. Freshman Kennedy Cancelado (Miami Springs, Fla.) defeated Pfeiffer sophomore Jimmy Molina (Bogota, Colombia) 6-1, 6-0 at the number four singles position. Cancelado paired with junior Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) to earn an 8-3 triumph at the number two doubles flight.

Wingate women 9, Pfeiffer 0

The Bulldog women matched the men’s team, winning every set contested Thursday. Freshman Caroline Holland (Spartanburg, S.C.) won the first two matches of her Wingate career. In doubles, she teamed with sophomore Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) to earn a hard-fought 8-6 victory at the number two flight. In singles, Holland earned a default (injury) win over Pfeiffer sophomore Taylor Lindsay (Gardendale, Ala.).

Williams blanked PU sophomore Macy Southern (Gibsonville, N.C.) 6-0, 6-0 at the number six singles position. Wingate lost only five games at the numbers four through six singles flights. Senior Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Pfeiffer freshman Melinda Athay (Linwood, N.C.) at the number five singles spot.
