Wingate's Lichtenstein is ranked number 36 in nat'l singles rankings
Tuesday, 04/05/2011
Skillman, N.J.----Wingate University junior Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) is ranked number 36 in the Campbell/ITA NCAA Division II national singles rankings, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announces this week. Fifty-five players are listed in the most recent rankings.
Lichtenstein is ranked number 12 in the Southeast Region singles top 20. Lichtenstein is 14-2 overall at the number one singles position. He is 6-1 in South Atlantic Conference contests. In doubles, Lichtenstein and senior partner Braeden Patchell (Oakville, Ontario) are 11-3 overall at the number two flight. The All-SAC pair is a perfect 7-0 in league matches.
“Matt is one of the hardest workers on this team,” Wingate head coach Michael Cabana says. “His hard work has paid off in his results this season. Matt has a great attitude and steps on the court with great confidence and a will to win. He has a mind set of flat out out-working his opponent.”
Cabana believes the ranking is a fitting tribute to Lichtenstein’s work to this point in his career. “Matt has worked his way up our line-up since his freshman year,” Cabana says. “He has grown into the player he is today. I look forward to Matt’s continued success this season and into next year.”
The Wingate men’s tennis team is 13-3 overall and 7-0 in the SAC. The Bulldogs are enjoying a nine-match winning streak. The Bulldogs are ranked number 39 in the Campbell/ITA NCAA Division II top 50.
The Bulldogs return to action this weekend, hitting the road for two important NCAA Division II Southeast Region matches. Wingate visits number 28 Lees-McRae College Friday (2 p.m.). Bobcat number one singles player Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary) is ranked number 21 on the national singles chart. The Bulldogs make the short trip to Coker College Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
