Women's Tennis Suffers 4-3 Setback To Samford
Monday, 03/23/2009

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Playing their second straight SoCon match in as many days, the Wofford women’s tennis team was narrowly defeated 4-3 by the visiting Samford Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Bulldogs improve to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in SoCon play, while the Terriers now stand at 2-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Samford took the early lead by snatching two of the three  doubles matches to take the lone doubles point and take a 1-0 advantage entering singles play. Haley Baird and Sabrina Smyers lost a tough decision on court No. 2 as they fell to the pair of Andrie Meiring and Jessica Diamond 8-6. On court No. 1, the Terrier duo of Cayley Wetzig and Ashley Lawrence  were downed by Taylor Morgan and Stephanie Parkison 8-3. The Terriers were granted a win on court No. 3 as the Bulldogs could not fill a doubles pair.
Wofford would make things interesting in singles play as they gave the Bulldogs all they wanted and then some. Things were tied quickly as Betsy Hauer was granted a win by forfeit on court No. 6 due to lack of players. Baird picked up her second straight singles match on the weekend as she downed Parkison 6-3, 6-4. The third and final Terrier win came on court No. 5 where Sonia Anand outlasted Beth Erwin 6-4, 7-5.
The Terriers will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Davidson, N.C. to take on the Davidson Wildcats at 3 p.m.
