Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs defeated the Bulldogs of Barton College in men’s and women’s tennis action Sunday afternoon. The Wingate men (4-4 overall) defeated Barton (4-5 overall) 6-3. The Wingate women (7-4 overall) defeated Barton (1-8 overall) 7-2.
For the Wingate men, freshman Matthew Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) won his singles and doubles match Sunday afternoon. He defeated freshman Pier-Alexandre Desilets (Quebec, Canada) 6-4, 6-4 in number five singles actions. Lichtenstein teamed with senior Jose Valarezo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) to defeat junior Matthew Jackman (England) and sophomore Diego Salinas (Mexico City, Mexico) 8-5 in number three doubles action.
The host Bulldogs went 5-1 in singles action. Sophomore Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania, Fla.) defeated Jackman 7-6 and 6-1 in number two singles action while Wingate sophomore Braeden Patchell (Oakville, Ontario) won the first set 6-1 over sophomore Chris Martel (Burlington, Vt.) before Martel retired due to an injury. Wingate freshman Andrew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) added a 6-3, 6-3 win in number four singles over Salinas while Freshman Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won 6-1, 6-2 over sophomore Leandro Peron (Santana de Parnaiba, Brazil).
For Barton, sophomore Cesar Grobel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) went 2-0 on the day, topping Wingate freshman Bruno Pudence (Sao Paulo, Brazil) 6-1, 6-2 in number one doubles while teaming with Martel to defeat Patchell and sophomore Louis Villarroel (Maraval, Trinidad) 8-2 in number one doubles.
On the women’s side, Wingate sophomores Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) and Zoe Hartas (Sydney, Australia) along with freshman Ewa Opala (Redziny, Poland) went 2-0 on the afternoon. Stasikelis defeated freshman Lindsay Toth (Sewickley, Pa.) 6-2, 6-1 in number one singles, while teaming with junior Pierce Dillard (Simpsonville, S.C.) to pick up an 8-3 win in number two doubles.
Hartas defeated senior Summer Chase (Snow Hill, N.C.) 6-1, 6-1 in number three doubles, while teaming with Opala for an 8-3 win in number three doubles. Opala added a 6-1, 6-0 win in number six doubles over freshman Ahday Newsome (Duncanville, Texas).
Junior Hollyn Alberghini (Stanfield, N.C.) rallied for a victory in number four doubles, defeating junior Kristen Packer (Burlington, N.C.) 6-7, 6-1, 10-8. Freshman Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win in number five singles over Blair Burke.
For Barton, senior Jessica Galasso (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was a perfect 2-0 on the afternoon. She teamed with Toth to defeat Alberghini and Alschlager 8-5 in number one doubles. Galasso followed that with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dillard in number two singles.
Both Wingate teams return to action Tuesday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 2:30 p.m. Barton travels to Lenoir-Rhyne Monday for a 2 p.m. start.
